STSM – Marija Mitrovic visits Bosiljka Tadic in Ljubljana

May 12, 2014 - May 23, 2014

Workplan of Marija Mitrovic

The Evolution of Web has revolutionized the way of human activity in various fields including knowledge dissemination; consequently, many science publishers of classical and online journals and scientific societies practice a fast communication of science results via Web portals (Blogs, Forums), which, apart from information about contents of the related science documents, offer an interchange of ideas, problems-solving, and feedback from the broad audience. This way of knowledge spreading becomes increasingly important and involves new social phenomena, e.g., cascade of comments and emergent popularity of specific topics at a much shorter time scale, contrasted with the classical journal publications. Understanding the underlying knowledge spreading processes by suitable analysis of empirical data and theoretical modeling is the research goal of this STSM. Specifically, we propose to assemble and analyze the data from several Q&A sites of the StackExchange: expert answers to your questions network. StackExchange is a network of forums where questions from different science disciplines are addressed. Our analysis, following the data mapping onto proper bipartite graphs, will enable us to determine how groups of users and related science subjects emerge and evolve over time. Furthermore, by using the discrete modeling dynamics, a modification of cellular automaton on bipartite graphs, we would like to investigate the nature of cascade phenomena on the bipartite networks obtained from the data and uncover critical parameters to control the dynamics. We also explore different visualizations of the empirical analysis. This visit contributes to WG 2 and 3.
