Human efforts to build a collective knowledge via online social interactions is an emerging area of interest both for science and society. It involves human actors with their expertise and suitable technology supports. A prototypal example is Questions & Answer (Q&A) system in science, where an appropriate tagging of the cognitive contents is available. In the process of Q&A, the social and cognitive elements interact and influence each other at an elementary scale. The co-evolving networks appear to have an extremely nontrivial organization at a mesoscopic scale, involving large cliques and clique-complexes as well as the communities of users sharing their accumulated knowledge. The occurrence of such complex structure tightly reflects the
activity patterns of individual users as well as their human attributes and knowledge. Therefore, a deeper understanding of these processes is vital for potential applications as well as the structure of the collective outcome value. Here, we propose to study the evolving mesoscopic structures in the networks of cognitive elements appearing in Q&A data from the site Mathematics. Representing the mutually connected cognitive elements, which are used in the process, these networks are a prototype of the collective knowledge from which others can learn. Applying the advanced algebraic topology of graphs, we will analyze the topological spaces around each cognitive element and quantify its role in the process. Furthermore, we will follow the appearance of innovations (new combinations of the elementary cognitive elements) over time and explore how they link to
the existing network and classify the type of structures formed around them.
