STSM Clustering citation networks with evolutionary algorithms

June 28, 2015 - July 5, 2015

Frank Havemann visits Albert Salah

My current research focuses on reconstructing research topics in networks of papers. I am especially interested in finding overlapping clusters in citation networks which should represent a poly-hierarchy of pervasively overlapping and nested topics of all possible sizes.
My plan for the one week STSM visit at Professor Ali Salah’s group (Cognitive Science Program) at the Department of Computer Engineering at Bogazici University in Istanbul is to discuss and learn from their experiences with the usage of genetic algorithms for clustering.
In particular I hope to get input to the following open research issues:
* How can evolutionary algorithms be optimised?
* How can different views on a research field result in different topic structures?
* How can different topic structures of a field be obtained by clustering algorithms?
The plan for the week envisages visits at the Department of Computer Engineering, meetings with researchers from Cognitive Science Program and attending the 5th International Conference on Scientometrics and Informetrics, Istanbul, 29.6.2015 -3.7.2015 (organised by Professor Ali Salah and colleagues), where I will present a paper accepted for the special session titled `Same data – different results? The performative nature of algorithms for topic detection in science` (organised by Wolfgang Glänzel, Jochen Gläser and Andrea Scharnhorst).
