STSM Publishing data: exploring publishing ventures such as data journals, linking data and visualizations in publications in an integrated way

December 18, 2016 - December 24, 2016

STSM Applicant: Dr Panayiota Polydoratou, ATEI of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki (EL), Polydoratou@libd.teithe.gr
STSM Topic: Publishing data: exploring publishing ventures such as data journals, linking data and visualizations in publications in an integrated way
Host: Andreas Rauber, Technical University of Vienna, Vienna (AT), rauber@ifs.tuwien.ac.at

The aim of this STSM is to forge existing collaborations in the area of research data management and exchange existing
knowledge and expertise in the area of research data management. Specifically, to
• Investigate the currently different and various options for publishing research data and focusing in particular on data
journals.
• Attempt a documentation of the differences between open data, data papers, open access journals and data journals. Also,
to note the existing number and typology of data journals as well as an overview of the subject domains they serve and their
publishers. Issues such as information on some of the data types those journals publish and the information policies
associated with the data at the point of submission will be investigated. Other issues of interest are to identify any policies that
are in place that impact on access, curation practices and sharing of such data. Questions that arise are how data journals
connect and interact with institutional repositories? Is there evidence about the impact and use of those journals? What are the
scholars’ views about data submissions and access? What could be the incentive for scholars to share research data via such
publishing ventures?
• Furthermore, we aim to benefit from the expertise of the IFS team in digital preservation and data citation and explore
common ground for future collaboration. For example, evaluate how far the RdA data citation solution can be used directly as
parameter in analysis and visualization processes, generating dynamic visualizations in overlay journal papers.
• One of the possible outcomes is the co authorship of a scholarly paper and on this subject and its publication in such a
publishing venture.
