STSM Sarven Capadisli meets CEDAR and Data2Semantics in Amsterdam

March 24, 2014 - March 30, 2014

Visualize your research process and visualize the network of data resources from the Linked Open Data cloud – Statistics in the age of the semantics web

Workplan of Sarven Capadisli

The Web has served as an ideal application to disseminate open and structured data. The goal of KNOWeSCAPE is to develop interfaces to navigate through the growing information spaces build from Linked Open Data (LOD). My work make use of the fact that national and international statistical agencies have considered the Web as a publishing platform for statistical Linked Open Data. Initiatives that interlink statistical datasets on the Web are hampered, and so improve this situation is the topic of my current PhD (Linked Statistical Dataspaces and Analysis) under Dr. Sören Auer’s supervision (University of Bonn). In parallel, I am a research associate at the Bern University of Applied Sciences, in Switzerland. My background is in user experience design and open Web technologies. During my stay in Amsterdam I will work together with specialists from the Data2Semantics project (VU Amsterdam, UvA), and the CEDAR project (DANS-KNAW, eHumanities group). We will discuss concept versioning and provenance (use of concept versions in statistical analysis, and visualisation of concepts with time series (e.g., how/when concepts are created, mutated, resolved and comparability (how to compare variables in statistical datasets in past and presence?)). More concretely, we attempt to evaluate the degree of comparability of the statistical concept schemes and concepts across agencies (or one agency/organization) and across time. The host in this period is Christophe Gueret (WG 4 leader), and the visit contributed to WG 1,3,4. A presentation at the eHg research meeting, and working on a common paper with another PhD student in Amsterdam (Albert Moreno) are part of the visit too.
